St. Vincent Health

Looking toward the future, St. Vincent General Hospital District has embraced the concept of a health campus where specialists, primary care, Lake County Public Health Agency, and other health-related offices reside in the old hospital building and synergistically complement services in the adjacent, new hospital facility.

St. Vincent Health has a new service that will offer state-of-the-art genetic testing. Pharmacogenomic testing, or PGx for short, is a branch of genetic testing focused on how an individual’s genetic makeup impacts their likely response to therapeutic medications. The testing will allow providers and their patients to collaborate on a unique treatment and care plan, guided by that person’s individual DNA.

When a provider and patient better understand how a medication may work with an individual patient’s body, more targeted and personal care and better outcomes result. The applications for genetic testing range from post-operative pain management to mental health medications, to nutrition and diet and much more.

Pharmacogenomic testing, or PGx for short, is a branch of genetic testing focused on how an individual’s genetic makeup impacts the likely response to therapeutic medications. When a provider and patient better understand how a medication may work with an individual patient’s body, the provider is better able to implement more targeted and personal care, while simultaneously increasing positive outcomes in a variety of care settings.

Dealing with health issues is stressful enough. When a patient is prescribed medication that does not work as the patient had hoped, they can experience increased stress and frustration. With advancements in genetic science the potential for stress and frustration is reduced. PGx testing can give providers additional patient information — information that they otherwise would not have — allowing the provider to choose the best medication for the individual patient.

“We’re excited to be able to offer this new service. We invite you to contact your primary care provider for additional information, or reach out to us directly to learn more about how you can benefit from PGx testing.”
